There are two types of home owners in the world. Those who spend excessive amounts of time living vicariously in the imaginary (and often unattainable) picture perfect homes they’ve curated for themselves on Pinterest, and those who simply marvel at the raw comfort of the imperfect but comfortable spaces that reflect their happiest and most authentic selves.

While it’s completely normal to have pinned, screenshot, and gushed over the Kardashian-Jenner clan’s glorious home spreads in the latest issue of Architectural Digest, it is easy to get caught up in the perfection of silk drapes, eclectic art pieces, and monochrome contrasts and forget that behind every shot, there is a team of experts called on to put together an award winning production. This year, the Johannesburg Homemakers Expo seeks to remind us of the authenticity we ought to exhibit in our homes and spaces by embracing perfect imperfections and staying in touch with a more organic world that is true to ourselves.

Aptly themed, “Raw Comfort”, the Johannesburg Homemakers Expo will be set against a backdrop of the finest in interiors, design and art, featuring exhibitions, workshops and forums – all centered around evoking every human sense that recognises the thrilling journey to home improvement. From the sourcing of textiles and fabrics, the origin and thought process behind bespoke designs, to the social responsibility carried by each creation, visitors will be able to engage with craftspeople, design, décor and home renovation experts to get a better understanding of home and lifestyle products.

Tuis \ Home Theatre

Food, wine, and DIY enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the popular Tuis / Home Theatre returns to the expo with a palate satisfying, fun filled programme that will give both new and returning visitors the kick-start they need to channel their inner Nigellas and DIY décor gurus. Food demos from some of South Africa’s celebrity cookbook authors will keep you well entertained, while gin tasting and an exclusive chat to Sihle of Sihle’s Brew coffee will make sure that your palate is well maintained.

Books and Banter Theatre

For people who value expert opinion, and a Johannesburg Homemakers Expo first, the Books and Banter Theatre will bring visitors a special look into the lives and minds of interior publishing editors and bloggers. This is where the writers, whose interior design, décor and lifestyle articles captivate us, will be discussing the latest home decor trends and secrets to creating an organically beautiful space.

Raw Workshops

In what I imagine to resemble the setting of a science lab for homeware-obsessed adults, the Raw Workshop is the perfect place to experience the core of the development of the creations we dream of having in our homes. Live demos will be held to showcase the lifecycle of raw products such as steel, glass, and concrete as they are moulded into exclusive, home improvement artifacts.

For the Love of Concrete Art and Design Competition

The art of homemaking does not exist without giving back, and to help raise funds for the charities supported by Homemakers Care, the expo will host an exhibition of the top entries from the For the Love of Concrete Art and Design Competition. Each exclusive piece will be available on auction throughout the duration of the expo.

Young Designers Challenge

The artistic masterminds from the University of Johannesburg will be giving visitors a sneak peek into the future, by displaying their talents and creativity while turning existing tools and machinery into imaginative multipurpose appliances. If you have ever wondered whether a drill could whip more perfectly peaked egg whites than your favourite high-end food processor, then this challenge is a must see.

Truly Artisan and Pets

Our furry family members deserve to live in lovely and comfortable spaces too. Truly Artisan promises to bring you the latest additions to your home for you and your pets to enjoy.

D’Vine Life

While home décor satisfies your visual cravings throughout the expo, a food market of delicious delicacies and cuisines will be available to satisfy your appetite with a wide variety of food and drinks.

The Johannesburg Homemakers Expo will take place between 28 February and 3 March 2019, at the Ticketpro Dome in Northriding, Johannesburg. Tickets are available at www.ticketpros.co.za.

Full exhibition times and programmes are available online.
