I recently read “You know you’re old when you’ve seen a fashion trend come and go more than once”. Cue crop tops, bell-bottoms, and rose coloured sunglasses and suddenly, the fact that I’ve just turned 21 again seems less exciting.
Of all the trends that have made a compelling comeback, the one I’m most eager to revive in my own closet is the classic tracksuit trend. Nostalgia triggers my earliest memories of tracksuits or “sweats”, as they’ve come to be known in the new age, first making an official trendy appearance in old RnB and Hip Hop music videos. Fast forward to a couple of years later and all of the cool kids (including yours truly) were flaunting Baby Phat and Juicy Couture sweat suit combos in the most vibrant colours. More recently, and a little to my surprise, fashionistas, Kardashian-Jenners, and Cotton Eaters alike are slaying their interpretation of this trend to the point where I’m left wondering why it even faded in the first place.
The versatility of the tracksuits trend is what is most attractive to me as sweats can be worn up or down and are one of the only other fashion items that range from affordable to splurge items, next to denim. Best of all, they accommodate women across the style spectrum – making the fashion item a true classic.
I’ve collected some of my favourite “tracksuit evolution inspiration” looks, and I’m beginning to consider dusting off the old sweats and rocking the streets (except I’ve probably worn them all out by lounging around in them and even sleeping in them, oblivious to the fact that they could be worth a thousand Instagram likes in the future), so I’ll probably just have to buy a pair.
